What Is Intersubjective
|
The term 'intersubjective' is simply a way of describing the nature of the experience when two (or more) people are in relationship. The 'inter' part means they both contribute to what is happening and what they are experiencing together. The 'subjective' part refers to the unique meanings we each bring to an encounter-our personal viewpoint. So, 'intersubjective' describes the experience that results when two unique and personal worlds come together.

Have you ever noticed that you just feel better around some people rather than others?
Unfortunately, most counselors and therapists believe they can understand their patients' concerns without considering the contexts and relationships in which their patients live.
An intersubjective viewpoint acknowledges this, and includes it when making sense of your difficulties or triumphs.

Intersubjective therapy treats you as a unique person in the context of your relationships. You aren't labeled or defined by a diagnosis from a textbook. Because I have experienced so much healing and growth as a result of working with others who embrace this perspective, I use it as my therapeutic orientation.
